Eat the Frog: What Tom Petty Can Teach Us About Decision-Making
Tom Petty once sang in Crawling Back to You, “Most things I worry about never happen anyway.” Simple words, but a powerful truth. Worry holds us hostage, often keeping us from making the very decisions that would move us forward.
Decision-making is one of the most challenging tasks people face daily. While choosing what to eat for breakfast can be daunting for some, I am referring to the decisions that shape our lives or, in some cases, what drive us. Most of the time, those decisions are guided by two forces: pleasure and pain.
We often choose to do something or avoid something based on whether it will bring us pleasure or pain. Think of filling out college applications. The process is tedious, and there is no guaranteed outcome. By procrastinating, a person avoids the pain of the application itself. Submitting early, though, avoids the anxiety of waiting, a relief that brings its own kind of pleasure.
Personally, I do everything I can to avoid pain. I tackle tasks head-on, even when they are not my favorite. It is not because I enjoy them, but because I know I would feel worse for not having done them. In my case, about 90 percent of my decisions are driven by avoiding pain. As the saying goes, sometimes you have to eat the frog.
The Performance Parallel: Becoming a Decision Maker
Healthcare professionals and business leaders alike know this: the bigger the stakes, the harder the decision feels. Where to live, whom to partner with, what career path to pursue, these deserve careful thought. But most decisions do not. And avoiding them out of fear of being wrong is what costs us momentum.
Here is some perspective:
Only 30 percent of first-round NFL draft picks sign a second contract with the team that drafted them. You have less than an 8.1 percent chance of winning more than five dollars on a lottery ticket. Political prognosticators have a 26 percent success rate in choosing the right candidate.
In most instances, you have a 50-50 chance of getting any decision right. So if you are right even half the time, as statistics would indicate, you are already ahead of the game. The more decisions you make, the better you get at making them.
From Hesitation to Action: Coaching That Creates the Shift
🟦 A Framework for Stronger Decisions through the GROW Process
- Clarify the goals that matter most, what outcomes do you want to create?
- Face the reality of where you stand today, what is slowing you down or keeping you from deciding?
- Explore the options in front of you, including the obstacles you will need to address along the way.
- Commit to the way forward, with clear accountability that turns decisions into momentum.
This is not about theory. It is about developing the practical confidence to decide, act, and grow.
Something to Consider
- What drives most of your decisions, the pull of pleasure or the push of avoiding pain?
- Where are you procrastinating because of fear of making the wrong choice?
- Which “frog” have you been putting off that would free up energy once completed?
- Who is helping you stay accountable for the decisions that matter most?
