September on the Road
September 2024 I had the good fortune of driving from Seattle to Banff, Canada in an RV with my wife. The Canadian Rockies, with their endless lakes and rivers, showcase some of the most spectacular scenery I have ever seen. A drive of this distance provides ample “windshield time”, those quiet hours behind the wheel that create space for reflection, planning, and inspiration.
And this September will be no different. My wife and I will be back on the road again, this time in Colorado, traveling in tandem with another couple in their own RV. Over the years, these fall trips have become something of a ritual for us. The destination matters, of course but it’s the rhythm of travel, the planning, the teamwork, and the reflection along the way that make it meaningful. September has become the month we step outside the noise, reset, and set our sights on what comes next.
That idea that it takes a team has always resonated with me. It is how I ran my practice and how I continue to coach my clients. No championship team ever won on the back of one player, and no business ever scaled through the efforts of a single individual. I’ve been blessed with incredible people alongside me, both in my former company and in my life. I may have been the face of the business, but the growth we achieved was because of the team behind me.
And the same holds true today. Next week, when the four of us head out across Colorado, two RVs rolling side by side, it will require alignment. You plan routes, agree on stops, adjust for weather, handle the unexpected, and keep each other in check. A successful trip is never just about who’s behind the wheel, it’s about how well you move together. In business, leadership works the same way: the destination may be clear, but it’s the shared rhythm, the communication, and the willingness to adapt that determines how smooth the journey will be.
This is How We Can Work Together
If you want to strengthen your team and culture, here’s where we begin:
- What do you really want? Every leader says they want a strong team. But what does that mean to you? Less turnover? More accountability? Better collaboration? Without clarity, “teamwork” stays vague.
- Where are you now? Look honestly at the reality. How aligned is your team today? Are roles clear? Is communication strong or strained? Are people motivated, or simply showing up? Reality checks are often uncomfortable, but necessary.
- What’s in the way? Teams don’t break down because of one big thing, but a series of small obstacles. Lack of trust, unclear expectations, poor systems, or even ego. Until those barriers are named, they quietly control performance.
- What choices are available? Once obstacles are clear, the options for growth appear. Sometimes the path forward is training. Sometimes it’s redefining roles, improving systems, or simply having the conversations that haven’t been had.
- What’s the next step? Team alignment is not fixed in one meeting. It’s built step by step. One clear decision, one clarified expectation, one honest conversation at a time. The leader sets the tone by moving first.
The image above is that of a classic Airstream with Devils Tower in the background. Devils Tower is where the scientific team collaborated to speak with the aliens in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. In Close Encounters, a team stood at the base of Devils Tower and found a way to speak in one universal language. It’s a reminder that breakthroughs don’t come from one voice, but from many, when a team aligns around vision and communicates as one. Labor Day honors the workers who carried this country forward. In business, your job as a leader is to honor your people by building an environment where they can succeed. A winning culture doesn’t emerge by accident. It emerges when leaders commit to clarity, consistency, and collaboration.
Something to Consider
- What does “teamwork” truly mean in your business right now?
- Where is your team aligned, and where are the cracks showing?
- What obstacles are quietly undermining your culture?
- What’s one specific step you could take this week to bring your team closer together?
