Time Out

August 25th, 2025

Be–Do–Have. Three words that describe a powerful shift in how we approach growth and fulfillment. Most people flip the order, living by Have–Do–Be: “When I have more time, money, or resources, then I’ll do the things I want, and then I’ll be the person I want to be.” It sounds logical, but it traps fulfillment behind conditions that may never arrive.

The Be–Do–Have construct reverses that mindset. First, you focus on who you choose to be – your identity, mindset, and purpose. From that place of clarity, you do the work that aligns with who you are. And then, almost inevitably, you have the outcomes and results that flow from that alignment.

I was first introduced to this concept at a business performance seminar early in my career. Honestly, it didn’t make sense to me at the time. How could you “be” before you had the results? But over the years, I’ve come to realize that this order is the difference between running in circles and making meaningful progress. How do you know if you are running in the wrong direction?

The key is learning when to call a “time out.” We get buried in doing, doing, doing. Without pausing, we never ask if our actions are in alignment with who we are becoming. Self-awareness is the hinge point. Are we functioning on auto-pilot or auto-purpose?

And this is where coaching becomes the tipping point. Coaching is the structured “time out” most people never give themselves. It provides the pause to ask the deeper questions: Who am I choosing to be? Are my actions aligned with that identity? Am I on a path toward having the results I actually want or just spinning my wheels? Left on our own, we rarely create that space. And almost never ask the questions that help reassess and ultimately redirect. Coaching builds it in.

Be–Do–Have is not about waiting for perfect conditions. It’s about choosing your identity first, taking action consistent with it, and then reaping the benefits. The question is: are you being intentional about who you want to be?

This is how we can work together

Where are your current actions out of alignment with your desired identity?
What obstacles are keeping you stuck in “doing” instead of starting with “being.”

How could redefining who you are shift the way you act daily.

What would it look like to call a regular “time out” and check your alignment.
